MERRIE ENGLAND

John Gardner 5 Philanders

Paul Reade Seascapes

Edward Elgar There is sweet music

Percy Grainger Brigg Fair; I'm seventeen come Sunday

Rick Wakeman Noah

Edward German excerpts from Merrie England

Guy Protheroe conduced the English Chamber Choir, and their long-time collaborator Rick Wakeman, in a typically eclectic programme of English music.

The Choir revived Noah - composed by Rick for their 25th anniversary in 1997, and the grumpy old man's distinctly merry take on the story of the flood - together with some other 'surprise' numbers featuring England's greatest keyboard wizard! The concert also included the revival of another piece commissioned by the Choir - Seascapes by Paul Reade. Paul achieved considerable success with his ballet scores for David Bintley and the Birmingham Royal Ballet - notably Hobson's Choice, but he was better-known for his many television scores - including the signature tune to the BBC's Play School programme, which entertained children for decades!

Also featured was the music of Percy Grainger (he of Country Gardens fame), Grainger was known as "the jogging pianist" for his habit of racing through streets to a concert, where he would bound on stage at the last minute - a bit like Rick really!

When performing with Rick at Hampton Court a couple of years ago, the Choir included a set of a cappella pieces which included a small gem entitled Rejection by John Gardner. This was one of a set called 5 Philanders; it proved so popular that the Choir set about finding the other 4 numbers, and the whole cycle was performed together for the first time since it was composed in the mid-1970s.

These nautical and pastoral aspects of England were complemented by a more 'patriotic' strand, represented by Elgar and, last but by no means least, Edward German, whose robust choruses from his Operetta 'Merrie England' brought the house down at the conclusion of last year's St George's Day concert at St James'.

Victoria Requiem

Tomás Luis de Victoria Requiem 1605

Guy Protheroe conductor

Ian Curror organ continuo

This late-night concert featured the celebrated Requiem of 1605, Victoria's final composition (he died 400 years ago this year). A work of beguiling beauty and sumptuous simplicity, it can be seen as the summation of both his art and the Spanish Renaissance tradition. His achievement mirrors in music that in the visual arts of some of the greatest of Spanish painters - El Greco, Velasquez and Murillo.

Divine Liturgy, Divine Inspiration

Tchaikovsky Liturgy of St John Christostom

Ivan Moody psaltis

Guy Protheroe conductor

More familiar to many as a composer of ballet scores and symphonies, Tchaikovsky, together with Rachmaninov, also explored the rich heritage of chant written for the Russian Orthodox Church, and set about writing music for the liturgy that would combine the familiar chant with the rich harmonic language of the late 19th century.  The Liturgy of St John Chrysostom lasted under an hour, and was performed with the appropriate chants that would be sung by the priest in a liturgical setting. The Choir was delighted to welcome Ivan Moody - composer, singer and now Orthodox priest based in Lisbon - as soloist. A late-evening performance, by candlelight, this was magical occasion.

Russian Evening

A unique blend of the Anglican Prayer Book liturgy with music from the Orthodox tradition, drawn from Tchaikovsky's Liturgy of St John Christostom.  An introductory talk, on the musical traditions of the Church in Russia, was followed by Solemn Eucharist (celebrant Canon James Rosenthal), accompanied by Tchaikovsky's music, sung by the Choir (Guy Protheroe conductor).

ST GEORGE'S DAY CONCERT

A Concert for St George's Day

A popular selection featuring the best of the English Choral Tradition. Programme includes:

Parry I was glad; My soul there is a country

Elgar Give unto the Lord

Harris Faire is the Heaven

Gowers Viri Galilei

Handel Coronation Anthem: 'Zadok the Priest';

Chandos Anthem: 'As pants the hart'

Britten Choral Dances from Gloriana

Vaughan Williams Three Shakespeare Songs

John RutterThe Lord bless you and keep you

Wesley Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace

WaltonCoronation March: Crown Imperial

German Choruses from Merrie England

Henry VIII Pastime with Good Companye

Trad. The Agincourt Song

and speeches from Shakespeare's Henry V

Ian Curror organ

Dudley Hinton speaker

Guy Protheroe conductor

This programme had two contrasting halves. The first featured some of the most popular favourites from the English anthem repertoire, ranging from coronation anthems by Handel and Parry, through small gems like Rutter’s The Lord bless you and keep you, to Elgar’s majestic setting of Give unto the Lord. The second part featured the more secular pastoral side of English life, although still with a strong monarchical bent – there was music for two Elizabeths and two Henrys, plus of course the words of the ‘immortal bard - not only from Henry V but in settings by Vaughan Williams as well.

The annual Good Friday performance of

Stainer's Crucifixion

Sir John Stainer wrote his 'Meditation on the Sacred Passion of the Holy Redeemer... interspersed with hymns to be sung by the congregation' for the Choir of St Marylebone Church in 1887 and it has been performed in the Church on Good Friday every year. Although the work fell out of favour during the 20th century (in common with other Victorian gems like St Pancras Station) it has enjoyed a considerable revival in recent years. The performance was conducted by Stephen Grahl, Director of Music at St Marylebone, who co-incidentally studied at Magdalen College Oxford, where Stainer was organist before moving to St Paul's Cathedral back in the 1870s.
