The annual Good Friday performance of

Stainer's Crucifixion

Sir John Stainer wrote his 'Meditation on the Sacred Passion of the Holy Redeemer... interspersed with hymns to be sung by the congregation' for the Choir of St Marylebone Church in 1887 and it has been performed in the Church on Good Friday every year. Although the work fell out of favour during the 20th century (in common with other Victorian gems like St Pancras Station) it has enjoyed a considerable revival in recent years. The performance is conducted by Stephen Grahl, Director of Music at St Marylebone, who co-incidentally studied at Magdalen College Oxford, where Stainer was organist before moving to St Paul's Cathedral back in the 1870s.

Rick Wakeman's 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII'

In 1972, Rick Wakeman, the keyboard player with the supergroup Yes, released one of the most iconic albums of all time, The Six Wives of Henry VIII.

The album was a massive success all over the world and to date has sold more than 15,000,000 copies on both vinyl and CD. Amazingly, the music had never been performed live in its entirety.

Performed in spectacular style on Hampton Court Palace's West Front, to a limited audience of 5000on each night, performers on stage, with Rick, included an expanded band, the English Chamber Choir, an orchestra and a guest narrator.  There were also dancers and side film screens.

In addition to The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Rick also composed three additional pieces to perform that evening; Tudor Overture, Defender of the Faith and Tudor Rock.

Both performances (the only performances of The Six Wives of Henry VIII anywhere in their entirety) were conducted by Guy Protheroe.
