Blue Cross Carol Concert
This popular annual event raised much-needed funds which enable Blue Cross to care for sick and abandoned animals in London and the UK.
The Choir was joined by the trumpeters of the London Banqueting Ensembles and Ian Curror, organist of the nearby Royal Hospital Chelsea.
Readers included actress Pam Ferris, BBC TV newsreader Louise Minchin, satirist John Bird and musician turned television personality Rick Wakeman,
The Choir has worked with Rick for nearly 35 years and he wrote a new carol for choir and himself at the piano, which was performed for the first time.
The evening was presented by CNN newscaster Sasha Herriman - herself a former (and still occasional) member of the Choir.
Music included popular carols with plenty of opportunity for audience participation, plus some more unusual numbers written for the Choir, including When Augustus reigned by Ivan Moody. |

EcleCtiCa
The Choir took its eclectic mix of repertoire to Surrey and the excellent setting of St George's.
This annual time of Remembrance was marked by two of Parry's Songs of Farewell and John Tavener's Song for Athene, while on a lighter note there were the broadway numbers which were so popular recently with our South Bank audience.
The programme included:
Parsons: O bone Jesu
Tallis: If ye love me
Mozart: Soave s'il vento (Cosi fan tutte)
Parry: Lord let me know mine end; My soul, there is a country
(Songs of Farewell)
Rachmaninov: Bogoroditse Dievo
Lunghu: Pre tine te laudam
Mascagni Easter Hymn (Cavalleria Restuicana)

Brahms Liebeslieder Walzer
James Sellars Kissing Songs
and popular favourites by Gershwin, Cole Porter, Fats Waller and others
Ian Curror, Roger Carpenter piano duet
Guy Protheroe conductor
The Choir kicked off its 2008-9 season with an appearance in this new series at the South Bank devoted to the diversity of choral work in the capital.
For those who missed the Songs for Lovers programme back in July (see below), it was the ideal opportunity to catch up with this wonderfully melodic and rhythmic repertoire. Around 300 people stayed around for the whole programme and were on their feet to join in a reprise of Ain't Misbehaving. |

Songs for Lovers
…and indeed the perfect music for a summer evening: this programme features music of many styles from madrigals to musicals, opera to barbershop. It is built around two sets of love-songs, both accompanied by piano duet: Brahms’ popular Liebeslieder Walzer (Love-Song Waltzes), and the less familiar but equally enchanting Kissing Songs by the American composer James Sellars. With full choral items contrasted with solos and smaller ensembles, Brahms is complemented by his Viennese predecessor Mozart, while the jazz and popular idioms of Sellars are matched by numbers from Broadway including Gershwin and Cole Porter.
Beforehand…
Our starting time is designed to link with the drawing of stumps at the end of the first day of the Test Match against South Africa at Lord’s. For those arriving with time to spare, a complimentary glass of wine will be available from 6.45 in the ambulatory at the side of the Church. The programme will be performed without an interval and will last just over an hour. Afterwards…
…Picnic in the Park
Why not follow this musical feast with an al fresco one? Everyone is invited to bring their own picnic and to adjourn across the road to the grassy slopes leading to the Regent’s Canal. (You may want to bring cushions and rugs as well.) Alternative arrangements will be made in the event of rain! |
